Divine Master's Message (April 13, 1979): Discipline, Endurance, and the Continuing Mission
Reflecting on Christ's Sacrifice
In his message delivered on April 13, 1979, at the Administration Building, San Jose, Dinagat Islands, Divine Master Ruben E. Ecleo, Sr. reflected on the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, encouraging believers to contemplate their deeper spiritual meaning.
He explained that Christ's suffering reveals the reality of human trials, His death reminds humanity of life's mortality, and His resurrection bears witness to the promise of life beyond death. The words spoken on the Cross—"It is finished" (Consummatum Est)—signify the fulfillment of His earthly mission while pointing to the continuing work of God among His people.
The Mission Continues
The Divine Master emphasized that although Christ declared His mission fulfilled, God's work among humanity continues.

He compared God's plan to a long-term program that unfolds through generations. While history progresses toward its fulfillment, every believer still has a role in carrying forward God's purpose through faithful living and dedicated service.
The Importance of Discipline
A central teaching of the discourse is the value of discipline.
The Divine Master described discipline as the foundation of spiritual growth and personal character. It teaches believers to accept both joy and suffering, to develop maturity, and to live according to righteous principles.
He reminded the brethren that discipline is not merely outward behavior but an inner transformation reflected in one's thoughts, actions, and daily conduct.
Learn Through Both Joy and Suffering
The message teaches that genuine spiritual maturity comes from embracing both life's blessings and its hardships.
The Divine Master explained that those who accept only moments of happiness have not yet fully understood God's purpose. Faith grows through patience, endurance, sacrifice, and perseverance during difficult times.
Believers are encouraged to remain steadfast, trusting that every trial contributes to spiritual growth.
Continue Growing in Faith
Using the image of a young plant, the Divine Master reminded believers that spiritual growth is a continual process.
Just as a seedling must be watered and cared for before it becomes a strong tree, faith must continually be nourished through learning, discipline, and faithful practice. Without a strong foundation, believers may struggle when confronted with life's challenges and temptations.
Live with Integrity and Good Character
The discourse repeatedly calls believers to avoid wrongdoing, cultivate good character, and practice self-discipline.
The Divine Master encouraged the brethren to reject harmful behavior, avoid speaking ill of others, and remain committed to righteous living. He emphasized that a person's integrity provides confidence even when facing criticism or misunderstanding because a life founded on truth and righteousness remains steadfast.
A Message to the Youth
The Divine Master gave special encouragement to the younger members, reminding them to value the guidance they receive while they still have the opportunity.
He urged them not to wait until life's trials arrive before developing discipline, faith, and good character. Instead, they should build a firm spiritual foundation early, preparing themselves for the responsibilities and challenges that lie ahead.
The central message of this discourse is that spiritual growth requires discipline, perseverance, and faithful living. By reflecting on Christ's example, embracing both joy and suffering, nurturing one's faith, and living with integrity, believers are encouraged to continue growing in character while faithfully participating in God's ongoing mission.
